Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups Lukewarm Water
- 1 3/4 teaspoons Sugar
- 1 package Yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons M-K Seasoned Salt
- 4 to 4 1/2 cups Flour
- 1/2 teaspoon M-K Ground Thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon M-K Ground Basil
- 1/2 teaspoon M-K Ground Marjoram
- 1/2 teaspoon M-K True Extract of Lemon
- 1/4 cup Margarine, softened
- 1 Egg Yolk, lightly beaten with 1 teaspoon water
Directions
- In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup lukewarm water, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, and the yeast. Let it stand in a warm place until the mixture becomes frothy and bubbles.
- Dissolve the M-K Seasoned Salt in the remaining 1 1/4 cups of lukewarm water. Add the remaining sugar and 1 1/2 cups of flour. Mix well.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and beat until they are well combined.
- Add the M-K Ground Thyme, M-K Ground Basil, M-K Ground Marjoram, M-K True Extract of Lemon, margarine, and 2 cups of flour. Mix the dough until it comes away from the sides of the bowl. Add more flour if necessary.
- Allow the dough to rest for 10 minutes.
- Knead the dough thoroughly on a floured pastry board for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, turning it so that it is coated on all sides. Cover the bowl with a dish towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in bulk.
- Punch down the dough, then knead it briefly on a floured board.
- Place the dough in a buttered loaf pan, cover it, and let it rise for another hour, or until the dough has doubled in size and comes to the top of the pan.
- Paint the loaves with the egg yolk glaze.
- Bake the bread for about 50 minutes at 350°F.
- Remove the bread from the pan. The loaves should sound hollow when thumped on the bottom crust.
- This recipe yields one 9 X 5 inch loaf of Savory Herb Bread.
